Avoid Plaque Attack

Prevention of tooth decay becomes easier once you know what causes it. Tooth decay occurs when food containing carbohydrates (sugar and starch) are continually left on the teeth. If not removed by daily brushing or a prophylaxis, food particles and plaque buildup produce acids that destroy tooth enamel and cause caries. Extensive plaque buildup can irritate gums causing them to become tender, bleed easily and even develop gingivitis.

Prevent tooth decay by paying special attention to the following:

•   Brush teeth twice a day
  Floss in between teeth daily
Eat a balanced diet
Limit snacks in between meals
Receive a professional cleaning and exam from a dentist every six months
Ask the dentist about fluoride, sealants and other options that can hinder the development of tooth decay
